Storage containers used as homes

By , June 30, 2010 3:13 am

Storage containers are immediate, strong and durable. You can transport large quantities at one time. You can modify them with minimal skill and without compromising their structural intergreity. Thousands of people in Australia lives in Trailer parks, Rv and modular homes. They are equipt with modern appliances and amenities. These optional features can also be included in storage container. These storage containers are a byproduct of the the developed world trade. They can be recycled into sustainable, durable, immediate housing. I would prefer to be in a metal box (storage container house) during a hurricane or an earthquake than a concrete, wood frame house or a FEMA supplied trailer. We need to get real about helping Haiti and the Third world. A storage container modifed into a house, a school, a clinic, or site office building is a viable option that should be promoted in Haiti and other disaster stricken countries.

Storage Container Costs

By , June 13, 2010 12:09 pm
You can find a basic 20′ storage container for sale for $1,000 to $4,000 or more. If you need to buy two or more containers, many vendors will knock a few dollars off the price and lower your transport costs. Vendors charge an hourly rate of $50 to $150 for customizing your container, plus the cost of materials. You could pay hundreds of dollars for basic add-ons like shelving or ramps, up to thousands of dollars to convert storage containers into office space.
Despite having almost three times as much storage space, 40′ storage containers and 40′ high cubes aren’t much more expensive than 20′ models. You can find 40′ containers for about $1,400 to $5,400; high cubes are priced from $1,400 to $5,800.
While new storage containers can cost several thousand dollars, the pricing is more palatable for used storage containers for sale. Vendors buy used units, fix them up, replace any broken parts, ensure they’re water tight, and apply a fresh coat of paint. The containers look as good as new, and you pay about 30% to 50% less for a used storage container than you would for a new one.
Expect to pay anywhere from $1,500 to $4,000 for a used container. Lower end units might include “as is” containers with few add-ons and no guarantees against water or fire damage. At the high end, the containers are fully reconditioned and feature all the functionality of a brand new model. The higher price may include the vendor’s cost of acquisition, trucking expenses, and repair and sealant costs.
Leasing and rentals
The average lease runs for 18-24 months. Monthly payments range from $75 to $150 depending on the condition and age of the container. When leasing, many vendors offer lower monthly rates for longer lease periods. Short-term rentals cost $3 to $8 per day, and you’re not tied down to a specific length term. However, if you plan to rent for several months, it is usually cheaper to work out a lease. Whether leasing or renting, you’re also responsible for delivery and pickup charges.
Storage Containers are an effective and safe way to store and transport your furniture and goods at your leisure. You can save money by loading your container yourself then store it on your own property saving on rental costs and Transport fees. Hire and sale, prices for containers are quite reasonable and transport locally and interstate is cost effective. Safety of your goods is assured as only the most desperate thieves would take the time and effort to break into one of these highly secure storage containers.

What are Storage Containers?

Storage containers are very secure and virtually vandal proof. As standard, there is provision for the fitment of padlocks to the door handles. For extra security a steel ‘Lock Box’ can be fitted to the storage container doors. A ‘Lock Box’ is designed to accept a high security container padlock, and protect the lock from being tampered with. Some padlocks are supplied with numbered keys.

Standard ISO freight containers are designed to withstand the rigors of marine transportation and are constructed with a high tensile steel rigid framework, with corrugated steel walls and doors. The floors are treated 28mm marine ply that is both rot and vermin proof , mounted on steel cross members. Standard containers have double doors fitted to one end of, retained by 4 full height locking bars all fitted with lockable handles. Additionally we also fit a high security lock box. Our containers are designed to be stacked 9 high on a ship whilst loaded with 30 tonnes of cargo in each, therefore when used for storage they will give years of maintenance free life.

Storage containers are mainly used for transporting an storing goods, but there is a lot moreabout them that you may not know. There are many different storage container sizes and condition grades that will influence price and quality when buying or hiring a storage container. Firstly we will talk about the different storage container grades to choose from.

There are four main grades of storage containers – New Builds (brand new containers), Premium Painted Storage Containers (refubished to near new storage containers), A Grade Storage Containers (serviced used storage containers), and Standard Grade Storage Containers (used containers straight off the stack – No service and usually slight damage). The price of these containers is usually gaged by the condition of the storage container and where the storage container will be delivered too.

There are three main storage container sizes – 10ft storage containers, 20ft storage containers and 40ft storage containers. The most popular storage container are the 20ft storage containers as they are commonly used to import and export goods around the world and are easier to load and store. Storage container companies mostly stock these storage containers for sale as they are abundant in most Ports around the country. 10ft and 40ft storage containers are also readily available from most container companies, though they can be more expensive depending on demand. Some storage container companies can also modify existing storage containers in other sizes by extending or shortening the containers and re-welding them.

When buying or hiring a storage container, delivery is something that will need to be arranged prior to ordering. 10ft and 20ft storage container sizes are usually delivered by a tilt tray transporter, while 40ft storage containers are delivered by a side loader transporter. A Hiab loader can also be used to deliver a storage container when delivering containers in confined areas, this is because the transporter has a mounted crane to lift and drop the storage container in place. Storage container hire is also an alternative if you’re not looking to buy a storage container outright. Most shipping container companies have long term and short term storage container options available upon request.

There are also other specialised storage container products that storage container companies manufacture. The four main modified storage container products include site offices, portable workshops, dangerous goods storage containers and accommodation unit containers. These modified storage containers are fitted with numerous storage container accessories such as doors and windows, kitchenettes and ensuites, air conditioners, power packs, vents and whirlybirds just to name a few. Storage container homes are looking more and more viable for the small house and small living movement. Yearly, millions of storage containers arrive in Australian ports, but only a portion of these containers ever leave our consumptive shores. For many companies, the cost of shipping empty storage containers back across seas for reuse exceeds that of purchasing new ones. Add to that our negative balance of trade, and empty storage containers start piling up. Although the problem remains formidable, out of the box thinkers are coming up with great ways to make use of the hundreds of thousands of storage containers for sale that are literally stacking up around the world. As it turns out, with a little spiffing-up, used storage containers are ideal building blocks for prefab homes, and their reuse can provide answers to environmental and social problems alike.
